Fred Varney age 82 passed away Tuesday, January 31, 2012 at the Pikeville Medical Center. Fred was born on January 1, 1930 to his parents the late John Varney and Dixie Deskins Varney. He was the husband of Magdalene Ward Varney, a retired coal miner for Kentland Elkhorn Coal Co., and a member of the Church of Christ. He also served his country honorably in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. Along with his parents, Fred was preceded in death by six brothers, Don, Howard, Edward, Tilden, Bennett, and Vint T. Varney, and four sisters, Hilma Varney, Vada Keesee, Hazel Grooms,and Stella Hunt. Along with his wife, Fred is survived by one son, Harold (Brenda) Varney of Phyllis, Ky, two daughters, Freda (Richard) Rose of Lick Creek, Ky., Darlene (Keith) Whitt of Phyllis, Ky., six grandchildren, Richie Rose, Julie Hinkle, Frederick Varney, Nathan Rose, Joshua Varney, John Varney, and four great grandchildren, Noah Rose, Sheridan Hinkle, Chelsea Hinkle, Camryn Bree Varney, and a host of loving family and friends. Visitation will be Thursday at 6p.m. at the Upper Grapevine Church of Christ. Church services will be Thursday and Friday at 6p.m. The funeral will be Saturday, February 4, 2012 at 1p.m. at the Upper Grapevine Church of Christ with Church of Christ Ministers officiating. The burial will follow in the Varney Branch Cemetery at Kimper, Ky.
