Mertie Elizabeth Adkins Hopkins Sloan went to be with her Lord and Savior December 11, 2013. She was comforted in her passing by her daughter, Vivian Kay. She was born May 28, 1926, daughter of the late Alfred and Vina Adkins of Dry Fork, and the loving wife of Joe Hopkins of Greasy Creek. Later in life she married Roy Edward Sloan of Melvindale Michigan who became “Pap” to all her children and grandchildren. Both husbands preceded her in death. She leave daughters Vivian Kay and a special son-in-law who assisted in her care, Bennie Kinney of Carleton, Michigan, Judy Fay (Dan) Hall of Somerset, Kentucky, and Kenneth James (Pam) Hopkins of Columbia Tennessee and a daughter-in-law Betty Sue. Her oldest son, Joe Hopkins, Jr, preceded her in death. She was the grandmother of eleven, and great grandmother of twenty-five. She leaves a sister, Phyllis, and brothers Howard and Marvin, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friend. During her life, she served her county by working in New York to support our soldiers during World War II, she was a seamstress and cook. Her most important accomplishments were being a daughter, wife, mother, grandmother, but most importantly, a servant of Our Lord. She was a member of the Victory Missionary Baptist Church, and during her illness, she was devoted and found great comfort in the teachings of Billy Graham. Visitation will be Saturday from 6p.m. to 9p.m. at the Lucas & Son Funeral Home. The funeral will be Sunday, Dec. 15, 2013 at 11a.m. at the Lucas & Son Funeral Home. The burial will follow in the Sanders Cemetery at Greasy Creek.
