Fred Gray

April 29, 1925 — December 11, 2014

Fred Estil Gray, age 89, passed away Thursday, Dec. 11, 2014 at his home. Fred was born on April 29, 1925 to his parents the late John Gray and Hattie Thacker Gray. He was the husband of the late Jetta Pearl Thacker Gray, a coal miner for Republic Steel Coal Co., and a member of Sutton Baptist Church. Fred also served his country honorably in the U.S. Army during World War II, and was a member of the UMWA for 50 years. Along with his wife and parents, Fred was preceded in death by one daughter, Deborah Chaney, three brothers, Hillard, Charles, and John Paul Gray, and three sisters, Betty Clark, Edith Almond, and Ruth Rowe. Fred is survived by four sons, John F. Gray, Gary W. Gray, Phillip Gray, William Doulgas Gray, one daughter, Kathy Elswick, two sisters, Willa Mae Bentley, Phyllis Kinney, fifteen grandchildren, twelve great-grandchildren, and a host of loving family and friends. Visitation will be Friday at 6p.m. at the Lucas & Son Funeral Home. Church services will be Friday at 7p.m. The funeral will be Saturday, Dec. 13, 2014 at 11a.m. at the Lucas & Son Funeral Home with Scott Tackett officiating. Burial will follow in the Annie E. Young Cemetery.
