Mabel Smith

January 11, 1932 — January 20, 2017

Mabel Thompson Smith, 85, returned to her heavenly home on January 20, 2017, her body weak and frail, but her spirit and soul were as strong as ever. Her devotion to her family and her faithfulness to her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ sustained her in all her struggles with illness and ultimately gave her peace. Today she is seeing her Lords face, breathing easy and perfectly new. Mabel was born to the late Dewey and Augusta Thompson, both from Raccoon Creek, Kentucky. She was born on January 11th, 1932 in Raccoon Creek, Kentucky where she was raised with her predeceased siblings, Beulah Thompson Coleman, Maggie Thompson, Rufus Layton Thompson, Reford Thompson, Augustus Lou Thompson Richardson, Alma Thompson Justice and Mae Evelyn Thompson Doyle. Mabel was always active in the Christian community, both at Meta Baptist Church in Meta, Kentucky and then Slate Hill Baptist Church in London, Kentucky. These communities of faith was to be her lifelong support starting from an early age. Mabel lived to love and serve others first being a devoted wife and mother and raising her children. Then working tirelessly as a sales associate at Gibson's Department Store and Hobbs, as well as working as a custodian for Summit Engineering in Pikeville, Kentucky. Mabel was blessed with a large and loving family and raised her four living children, instilling Christian values, encouraging them to aspire to greater heights, to help others along life's road, doing all this with humility. She taught them to handle life's many challenges with courage and grace. From the very beginning, she dedicated her children to God and encouraged them to explore the beauty of God's Creation by teaching them to be still and listen to the birds sing, watch the tiny hummingbirds as they buzz around her many hummingbird feeders, work to grow and harvest a delicious garden cucumbers, watermelons, cantaloupes and greens, take walks and look at the weeping willow trees and cultivate her bountiful and beautiful flower gardens. Mabel was the epitome of God's grace and unconditional love. She was kind and soft-spoken, and always had a cup of coffee and ready to cook a meal for whoever came in her home. She was adamant about thinking of others and would always remember your birthday with a perfectly chosen card and a thoughtful note. She especially enjoyed watching Kentucky Wildcats basketball with those she loved. She is dearly missed by her loved ones, who while are in sorrow today celebrate the fact that she is healed and at peace with her Creator. Mabel is survived by her children; Cleatus Smith (wife Julie), Vanessa 'Vannie' Hall, Connie Smith Belcher (husband Tim) and Kathy Smith; her grandchildren Stacy Robinson, Tabitha 'Tab' Daniel, Amanda Ratliff, Lisa Thacker, Anu Lane, Ashley Hunt and Donnie 'Little Man' Smith; 20 great-grandchildren and a host of extended family and friends.
