Fred Sword, age 78, of Pikeville, passed away on Sunday, August 17, 2008, at the Pikeville Medical Center. He was born on December 2, 1929, the son of the late John Wesley and Mollie Justice Sword. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by two sons, Freddie Sword, Jr, and Johnnie Sword, by one daughter, Bernice Sword, by two brothers and five sisters. Fred proudly served his country with the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He had also worked for the Spurlock Coal Company and was a member of the Island Creek Freewill Baptist Church. He is survived by his wife, Thelma Rogers Sword, by two daughters, Brenda Sword Watson of Leander, KY and Barbara Sword Tucker of Island Creek, by five grandchildren and five great grandchildren. Visitation will be held on Monday, August 18, 2008, after 6 p.m. at the Lucas & Son Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday at 11 a.m. at the Lucas & Son Funeral Home with Troy Tackett, Charles Justice and Coy Wright officiating. Burial will follow in the Sword Family Cemetery. Special services will be held on Monday and Tuesday nights at 7 p.m.
