Elder George Baker, age 88, of the Slate Creek section of Buchanan County, Virginia, passed away Thursday, Nov. 7, 2024. Born on Knox Creek, Virginia, he was the son of the late Elder Jink and Eva Justus Baker. Along with his parents, He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 60 years, Mary "Athleen" Mullins Baker, 9 sisters: Polly, Elizabeth, Jenny, Sara, Mary, Claire, Laura, Florence, and 1 infant, 4 brothers: Herman, James, Dale and Wayne, and one daughter in law, Wanda Blankenship Baker.
George along with his wife, were baptized on June 18, 1967 by Elders Jink Baker and Casby Conaway, later being ordained a minister in 1970, where he served the Bee Branch, Mountain Home and Old Samariah Churches as Assistant Moderator and Moderator and the North Spring Church as assistant moderator. He also served Assistant Moderator of the Old Friendship Association for 10 years. He was a devoted and faithful member of the Mary Lou Old Regular Baptist Church where he served as the Moderator from 1980 until his passing. You could always find "Brother George" somewhere in church on Saturday and Sunday mornings, even when his health limited him, he loved the old church and desired to be with his brothers and sisters that he loved dearly. George was a retired coal miner and a member of the UMWA Local #1374.
Those left to cherish his memory are his two sons, Donald "Dude" Baker of Grundy, Va., Doug Baker and wife, Judy, of Grundy, Va., two grandchildren, Sara Fuller, and husband Howie of Whitewood, Va., Jonathan Baker and wife, Holly of Elizabethton, Tn. One step Grandson, Timmy Mullins and wife, Christina of Grundy, Va., three great grandchildren, Alexis and Hayden Fuller, and Eli Baker, two step great grandchildren, Kayleigh and Jase Mullins. One sister, Nancy Fugitt of Grundy, Va., and a host of loving family and friends.
Visitation will be Saturday at 5p.m. at the Mary Lou Old Regular Baptist Church. Church services will be Saturday and Sunday at 7p.m. The funeral will be Monday, November 11, 2024 at 11 A.M. at the Mary Lou Old Regular Baptist Church with Elder Iven Blankenship and others officiating. Burial will follow in the Mary Lou Cemetery. Mary Lou Old Regular Baptist Church is located Stateline Ridge Road Paynesville, WV.
