Jackie Charles, age 70, passed away Tuesday, May 10, 2022 at the University of Kentucky in Lexington, Ky. He was born on May 19, 1951 to his parents the late Anthony Charles and Oma Pinson Charles. He was the husband of the late Inis Sue Ratliff Charles, a retired school teacher for Pike County Board of Education, and he taught his first years in Big Rock, Va. Jack graduated from Johns Creek High School and Pikeville College with a degree in Elementary Education. He also received his Master's Degree from Morehead State University. Jack spent close to thirty years in the classroom, teaching at Big Rock, Va., and Elkhorn City Elementary School in Pike County, Ky. He spent many years as Elkhorn City Elementary and Junior High Academic Coach. Jack also helped work with the extension office and 4-H in Pike County. He truly loved teaching, especially history. He enjoyed supporting artists collaborative Theatre in Elkhorn City, and working in his garden. He also enjoyed watching the birds and wildlife in his yard. Jackie was a member of the Grassy Freewill Baptist Church for over 50 years and served as a Deacon and the church clerk for many years. Jack also was an active member of the Gideon's International for 28 years. He was a strong man in his Christian Faith and he lived by Proverbs 3:5 & 6: Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct thy paths. Along with his wife and parents, Jackie was preceded in death by two brothers, James Robert Charles, Arvil Charles, and one infant sister, Myrtie Jane Charles. Jackie is survived by one daughter, Sarah (Greg) Bentley, one grandson, Andrew Bentley, one brother, Argyle (Jackie) Charles, three sisters, Carolyn Sue (Curtis) Syck, Linda (Danny) Bevins, Margaret (Hugh) Smith, two sister in laws, Becky Charles and Francis Charles, a host of loving nieces and nephews. Visitation will be Friday at 6p.m. at the Lucas & Son Funeral Home. Church services will be Friday and Saturday at 7p.m. The funeral will be Sunday, May 15, 2022 at 1 P.M. at the Lucas & Son Funeral Home. Burial will follow in the Johnson Memorial Park.
