Shelby Jean Steele,75, passed away peacefully at home on 11/27/2024 surrounded by her family, who loved her more than words can say. Her warmth, wit, and love left a lasting impact on everyone fortunate enough to know her.
Born January 10, 1949 to Emzy and Dorothy Rogers, Shelby arrived with grit in her bones and a heart as big as the mountains she called home. She was a shining example of strength, faith, and determination. She faced life's storms with courage, nurtured her relationships with love, and poured her heart into everything she did. She inspired everyone lucky enough to meet her.
Shelby spent many happy years working at the Pikeville Walmart Vision Center, where she became a well-loved fixture in the community. Mention her anywhere in Pike County, and someone was sure to light up and say, "I love her!" And if you had time to chat, she probably would remind you she was also Pike County's spelling bee champion.
For over 30 years, Shelby was a devoted member of Justiceville Bible Baptist Church. Her faith was the cornerstone of her life, and she lived it every day.
One of Shelby's greatest joys was going on adventures with her family. Whether it was floating down a river in Jamaica, seeing the Christmas lights in Pigeon Forge, or spending a day at the beach, she was always first to say, "Yeah buddy!" when travel plans were made. She lived for the moments that brought her family closer.
Shelby is survived by her loving husband of 44 years, Robert Steele. She leaves behind her children, who couldn't have loved her more: Shannon (Andrea), Leslie (Jody), and Brett (Eric). Shelby also adored her sister, Pauline Taylor, who brought her immeasurable joy, and her sisters-in-law, Pat Rogers, who was a sister to her in every way and filled her life with love and laughter and Wanda Hashemzadeh who shared many wonderful memories with her.
Her grandchildren, Hannah McCall, Greydon McCall, and Macy Hamilton, were the lights of her life, and she never missed an opportunity to shower them with love. She also had many nieces, nephews, and extended family members who she was absolutely crazy about.
She will rejoice in Heaven as she is reunited with her beloved mother, Dorothy (Rogers) Hall, her father, Emzy Rogers, and her brothers, Emzy and Carl Rogers, along with other cherished members of her family who went before her. Their reunion will surely be filled with joy.
Shelby's life was a beautiful story of love and faith, and her family knows that her legacy will live on in every life she touched. They take comfort in knowing that this isn't goodbye, but "see you later."
